Obtaining WEL service plans

Free service plans with information about our electricity and fibre optic network can be obtained through the beforeUdig website. Service plans are emailed to you after you submit your beforeUdig enquiry.
This is a free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week online service. It normally takes less than 10 minutes to submit an enquiry. Responses are automated and you should receive the WEL plans by email within a few minutes, however if you have any issues, refer to the beforeUdig website for more information. You can also use the beforeUdig New Zealand app for iPhone or you can call beforeUdig on freephone 0800 248 344 during ordinary business hours.

Reading WEL service plans

A legend will be provided in your beforeUdig response email which you can use to interpret the lines, colours and symbols used on our plans. Note that trench lines, duct lines and asset site symbols used on the plans represent the approximate physical location of the assets but cables and equipment is shown offset from these for clarity. For example, cable in a trench is shown on the plans as being offset from the trench. If you have any questions about reading our plans or the legend provided, contact us.

Accuracy of WEL service plans

While reasonable measures have been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in our plans, they are indicative only and errors and omissions may exist. We therefore recommend that hand digging continues until all of the cables have been found. If you have excavated and found a WEL cable in a location that differs from the plans, contact us and where possible we will visit site to collect the GPS co-ordinates of the cable and update our records. Inaccurate plans do not relieve the personnel responsible for the excavation from carrying out all other precautions that are necessary to avoid injury and damage.

Validity of WEL service plans

Our plans are valid for 30 days. If the validity date of the plans expire, a new beforeUdig enquiry should be submitted. A new beforeUdig enquiry should also be submitted if the scope of work changes or the location of the dig site is incorrect.

Ultrafast Fibre fibre optic network

Ultrafast Fibre service plans are also provided by beforeUdig. UFF  fibre optic cables may be direct buried or installed in typically red coloured ducting, whereas WEL Networks Ltd fibre optic cables are shown on our plans and may be directly buried, or installed in typically orange or salmon coloured ducting.

Excavating without plans

Plans should be obtained from the beforeUdig website before excavation commences. Section 23 of the WorkSafe Guide for Safety with Underground Services publication provides further guidance on excavating without plans during emergency and unforeseen work.
