WEL Builds On Long-standing Partnership with Waipā

WEL is building on more than 20 years of collaboration with Waipā Networks, with a new agreement that will see Waipā Networks use an established WEL platform to modernise how their electricity network is managed.

Under the agreement, Waipā Networks will implement an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) through a co-hosted arrangement on WEL’s existing platform. ADMS is a software system that provides real-time visibility and control of electricity networks, enabling faster, safer and more informed operational decisions.

By leveraging WEL’s proven control room capability, the partnership demonstrates how regional electricity distribution businesses can work together to reduce duplication and deliver better outcomes for the communities they serve.

For Waipā Networks customers it will mean better information during outages, faster decision-making when faults happen, and a network that is better prepared for increasing electrification and new energy technologies.

WEL Chief Executive Garth Dibley says the agreement reflects both the strength of the long-standing relationship and WEL’s capability in delivering scalable operational platforms.

“We’ve worked closely with Waipā Networks for more than 20 years, so this is a natural extension of the control room services we already provide to them and will also provide their engineers with more detailed visibility of their network status,” says Dibley.

“By using a common platform our teams can operate even more effectively, especially during major network events.

“It’s a good example of regional collaboration delivering practical benefits.”

Waipā Networks Chief Executive Damien Whiffen says partnering with WEL provides a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to building its own system.

“This is a significant step forward for Waipā Networks, and a strong example of what can be achieved when regional lines companies work together,” says Whiffen.

“Rather than building a separate system from the ground up, we’re partnering with WEL to use proven technology, shared expertise and a control room model we already know works.

"It’s a more efficient approach that reduces risk, avoids unnecessary duplication and helps us focus our investment where it matters most - keeping the network safe, reliable and ready for the future.”

The ADMS rollout will be phased, with WEL and Waipā Networks working closely together on execution planning alongside key service providers.
